The Sacramento County Water Agency (SCWA) began construction activities on a new surface water treatment facility located on an 80-acre site on Florin Road between Bradshaw and Excelsior Roads. The new plant will be called the Vineyard Surface Water Treatment Plant (VSWTP).
The construction contract has been award to Balfour Beatty Infrastructure, Inc. and the project officially broke ground on May 21, 2008. The plant will be designed to treat up to 50 million gallons of water per day. This project, expected to be online in Fall 2011, is part of a concerted effort to limit groundwater pumping and to ensure the long-term sustainability of the groundwater basin.
Water diverted by the new Freeport Regional Water Authority intake facility located on the Sacramento River will be pumped to the Vineyard Surface Water Treatment Plant, where it will be treated to drinking water quality for delivery to SCWA customers.
