What is mitigation?
Mitigation is the effort to reduce loss of life and property by lessening the impact of disasters. Mitigation is taking action now—before the next disaster—to reduce human and financial consequences later. Effective mitigation requires that we all understand local risks, address the hard choices and invest in long-term community well-being and resilience. Without mitigation actions, we jeopardize our safety, financial security and self-reliance. ~ Governor's Office of Emergency Services.
What is HMGP?
The Hazard Mitigation Grant Program (HMGP) is a funding mechanism to promote hazard mitigation activities such as home elevation after a disaster has occurred.
Has Sacramento County applied for HMGP in the past?
- In 2016, we applied for a Grant under Disaster Number 4240. This application has been processed by the State and Sacramento County is currently responding to a FEMA Request for Information. Check back here from time to time for updates on this grant.
- In 2017, we applied for a another Grant under Disaster Number 4301, 4305, and 4308 (January and February Storm Events of 2017) This application has been submitted to the State.
How do I apply for a Hazard Mitigation Grant?
You can't apply on your own for this grant. You must go through Sacramento County to be considered. The process starts when we gather requests for assistance and submit a Sub-Application to the State of California, Governor’s Office of Emergency Services. From there, the State submits an Application to Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Once awarded by FEMA, funding is funneled through the State, and then the local agency.
If you would like to be considered for future Hazard Mitigation or receive more detailed information contact please email us at WRFloodInfo@saccounty.net.
